Another Slow Week for Blogging

My 9-5 and trying to maintain two homes (yard work etc) is kicking my ass lately all while trying to finish some ongoing re-finish projects hasn't left me much time to get out salvaging etc. Just for fun here's my version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I get asked regularly if it's from the 70s and comments on what a cool truck. It's a 1993 (not vintage) that I paid $500 for and $1000 in parts to make road worthy, it's not cool it just so happens to run very well and drags my ass from A to B while allowing me to keep junking, thrifting, salvaging. On the plus side while gas prices here hover around $1.28 per litre this gem runs on Propane at 0.59cents per litre, can you say savings. I knew that you could. No there is no snow here in the Great White North, this photo is from January 2011 while this past winter we're lucky if we got 1ft of snow all season.

just a sample of my fav salvage yard (10 acres of salvage heaven) lots of pastel coloured bathroom fixtures. These old buses and shipping containers are jammed full of everything you could imagine plus a yard full of industrial steel what nots.

This past Saturday May 26 was the first of the twice a year "Christie Conservation Area Antique Show & Sale". Its 10acres and over 300 vendors of awesome and I totally bailed on it http://www.conservationhamilton.ca/christie-antique-show. My girlfriend has been volunteering for a young girls group and Saturday was a 10km run that was part of that, I could have gone to the show myself but I know she likes it as well so instead I did something she hates and went scrambling thru a fav salvage yard digging thru junk and doo-doo to find some neat things, then spent the rest of the weekend fixing some botched gardens and cleaning up around the yard. I'm thinking I might make a short table out of the round pattern and get glass cut for it, the others I'll sell individually.

Chinese Boy & Girl Chalk Ware

I've been crazy busy trying to refinish a Dining room set and some other chairs I have, but in between while waiting for coats of finish to dry I manage to finish some other projects like the lamps in my last post. I have little time to find new things but I did find these pieces of chalk ware, while not high style they have kitschy appeal to them and they are green my fav colour. I'd like to hang them up but the GF squashed that, oh well sacrifice is the price you pay for love. I managed to take down the headboard I made and repaint the panels white since the bronze paint I applied didn't suit anything. The duvet cover I got on sale at The Bay the stripe pillow cases from the Dollar store and brand new still sealed in the original bag goose down feather pillows from Value Village (Three huge scores for the boudoir) the small orange stripe oval pillows I made with fabric from Value Village.

Pairpoint Dolphin Lamp - Antique Floor Lamp

Finally got around to cleaning tons of crude off what might be one of my favourite lamps (Dolphin). Not sure why dolphins there actually fish. I'm glad I did it proper and took it apart as someone had spliced and taped the original cloth wiring onto some newer wiring in the column. So I scrubbed with vinegar and toothbrush, rewired and removed a goofy makeshift washer that was added. I'll never be able to afford a signed original hand painted glass shade (not that I like them much) but I really like the black cloth one I found.                       

The floor lamp must have been in a barn or garage, the cloth wiring smelled like rat urine and inside the tri-light was packed with bugs. I totally dismantled the entire light separating the base the column and the light head then wiped down with WD-40 to remove gunk and rust, rewired and replaced one switch. Just picked up the fibreglass shade at the market which alone cost me more than I paid for both  lamps.

Local One of Kind Tin Wall Art by Kerry Foster

Bought this at Value Village I assume it to be one of a kind art, each piece has a small unassuming sticker on the back saying "made by Kerry Foster Toronto" I'm not sure if it was an art project or someone trying to break onto the scene but who ever this person is they've made interesting pieces here. All three can be hung individually, one has the tin pieces bent concavely while the others both have flat lying tin. Sorry about the shotty pics I really have to find a space to photograph things.

Aberfoyle Antique Market-Opening Weekend

nice set reasonably priced at $175

awesome set solid teak, thick & chunky well worth $345 though they are new  

not to fond of tile inlay but the tile pattern caught my eye

impressive mostly single plank(some 2ft wide) tables of walnut, cherry, oak, 2" thick rough cut finished 2 sides. many more on other side of tent

nice set for an office just need a little leather conditioner and a light cleaning of the wood

my personal favourite of the day is this 50s folding serving cart, was in immaculate condition but the $150 price was a little steep for me

This was the first weekend for the Aberfoyle Antique Market, I wasn't overly impressed with the permanent vendors wares but the once per week parking lot space vendors never fail to have some great stuff. These are some pics of some things I found interesting. No purchases today, this was more of a fact finding mission.

My Badass"65 Buick LeSabre

This car was one of those situations when your eyes are bigger than your mouth, and I bit off more than I could chew (more like afford). I bought this car when was around 21 I guess and I thought it was the most bad ass ride I'd ever seen. I had some understanding of automotive repair and absolutely zero fear (zero sense), it was love at first sight of that Seafoam Green. I had just worked one year for the car auction which I'm still at and when this baby rolled in I knew I had to have it, I found out which dealer brought it in and when no one bid on it I asked how much? When he said $500 I couldn't get the money out of pocket fast enough. Barely running I taped up all the spark plug wires with electrical tape as they were lighting up like a Christmas tree because they were so old and slapped a dealer plate on and drove her home in all her sans exhaust glory which ended were the Y-pipe meets the firewall, the rear brake line was pinched shut because it was blown (see told you no sense). 88kms (Mississauga-Hamilton) of screaming loud hell on wheels and unbelievably not one cop to be found. For it's age and condition this car flew with it's two speed auto tranny and I loved it. Later I spent $100 and with that I got an awesome score, Front Bumper, Rear Bumper, both exhaust manifolds and front lap belts(it had no belts when I bought). A couple years go buy and realizing I could never restore do to costs and lack of proper facilities I flipped it for exactly $600 which I had into it. Here are some pics of it and some original mag adds I still have.

OCD In Full Affect-Kathie Winkle Designs

This is the pattern I've been telling Mr Modtomic & Nickarmadillo (MCMidwest) about and now I can't get it out of my head (must be OCD). I keep referring to it wrong, It's "Broadhurst Ironstone w/designs by Kathie Winkle" this pattern is called "Rushtone" circa 1965. This image is a set that is posted on KIJIJI (Canadian classified kind of a combo of E-bay & Craigslist) it's 38pcs for $60 located in B.C. I've spotted the large platter and large bowl both in the center of this pic at a local thrift shop for $7 pair. Kathie Winkle did some floral patterns in a modern theme but it's the geometric I find appealing.....And last night I spotted 18pcs of Russel Wright Oneida China 11 dinner plates and 7 sandwich plates for around $36, they were all the same a deep brown with a lighter brown around the edge kind like a stone crock look. I didn't find it that appealing, kind of blah.
